About Charles Culbertson

In a career that has spanned more than 40 years, Charles Culbertson has worked as a journalist, historian, publisher, editor and public relations specialist. During those four decades he wrote more than 500 local history stories for the Staunton Leader and published seven books on the history of Staunton and Augusta County. Additionally, Culbertson has republished several rare, long-lost works on local history, including Home Scenes and Family Sketches: My Life in Staunton, Virginia 1823-1864, by Joseph Waddell, and Early History of Staunton and Beverley Manor, by Edward Aull.

Culbertson - who recently published his first work of fiction, Siege at Fort Lyautey and Other Stories - has won writing awards from the Virginia Press Association, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and Writer's Digest. Although he is retired, he continues to research the history of Staunton and Augusta County and to help with local causes focused on preserving the area’s history and architecture.
